Perhaps, the most common debate when choosing a CMS (Content Management System) for your site. I have seen people saying Joomla as being too complex to handle or too slow as compared to WordPress. Also WordPress is said to be too simple or not much advanced as compared to Joomla.

Honestly, I don’t think there is a comparison between the two in any case! Comparison is often between two similar things. In this case, these two things are NOT similar.  As per their respective site’s:

WordPress is a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. WordPress is what you use when you want to work with your blogging software

While the Joomla website says:

Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility.

From the above two descriptions taken from their respective sites, I hope it is clear that WordPress was designed just for blogging needs of people and made as easiest as possible for mass audiences while Joomla was designed to help people build big websites that has lot of content to be managed. In short, WordPress is NOT a CMS while Joomla is a CMS.

Now that we have at least differentiated between the two, let’s see why they are often made to fight against each other. WordPress, though was just designed for blogging needs, has evolved itself into a lot bigger thing. Because of it’s simplicaity and amazing modularity there are lots of plugins and themes available to customize it make use of it almost for every purposes. Also, Joomla is desgined as such that it can be used for simple needs like blogging along with it’s complex features. Hence sometimes, their role is swapped and this gives arise to the debate as to which is better.

So what I would like to say is, none of them is better than each other as they are completely different platforms. WordPress is for your blogging needs and also for your website if it doesn’t demand much features or has to handle much of a data. While if you need a to build a big site for your company or it needs large content handling features, then go for Joomla without a second thought. I am sure you would love both of them for their respective features and advantages.
