How to ban a site on your Computer

18 May 2009 No Comment

Sometimes, it becomes really imporatant to ban a particular site from your computer. Reasons vary but yes you might feel the urgent need to ban a site. While there are many ways to do this, the best way is for sure to ban a site from all browsers!
Well banning a site works in two ways:

  • Ban it entirely on your computer.
  • Ban it in your respective browser. Meaning a site banned in IE can still be accessible in Firefox or other browsers and vice versa.

Method 1:

Let’s see first how to ban it entirely on your computer as it’s the easiest and most effective way!

Browse to the drive of your Windows operating system e.g. C: and then navigate to -

C:Windowssystem32driversetc  (If you have your operating system on other drive then substitute C: with that drive)

Open the file ‘hosts’. To open it, you can use Wordpad or any other text editor. Now scroll down at the end and look for something like “127.0.0.1″. Under that, add this:
127.0.0.1 www.yoursite.com (Replace www.yoursite.com with the URL of the site that you want to ban!)

That’s it! You are done. Now that site won’t open in any other browser on your computer.

Method 2:

To ban a site in Internet Explorer, open the IE first. Then go to Internet Options -> Content-> Enable Content Advisor.

In that, just enter the site that you want to block and that site won’t open in IE.

To ban a site in firefox, you need to install any of the Add-ons e.g. Blocksite and you are done! The site won’t open in FF from now onwards.

However the above tricks work only with the respective browsers and the site can be accesses using other browsers. So be careful about it!
