All new Apple iPad- All You need to know!

30 January 2010 One Comment

I know this is a bit late to write about Apple iPad as there are already millions of articles out there. But then, I didn’t want to write about the same news in the same way either, which is why I choose to wait for a few days, read extensively about it and then pen down everything at ONE place instead of making numerous posts about each and every feature of it! So here all you need to know about the iPad!

The Apple iPad (sounds like sanitary pads?) is a device launched by Apple in line with the Amazon Kindle. However as Apple always has been, it’s sleek and sexy than the Kindle*. The iPad runs on the same OS as that of iPhone so all your apps that run on iPhone and iTouch will run here as well! It’s a good news actually, as this way Apple would already have thousands of apps for the iPad. Apple also released a new SDK for iPad that will enable developers to create iPad exclusive apps as well, to exploit the iPad’s gorgeous 9.7″ inch screen and some other extra features (if there any!).

The Dimensions:

Fcuk the technical numbers, I will post a picture instead! The numbers are in inches.

Yes, it’s really sleek like the other Apple devices and looks gorgeous and it weighs just 1.5 pounds!

The Display:

  • 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology
  • 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)
  • Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating
  • Support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously

However, doesn’t have the e-ink like the Amazon Kindle so it scores less here! The bezel might be a problem to a lot of people.

Storage, Battery and Processor:

The iPad will come in 3 flavors – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. (Much less for a device like that!). The battery is however good and will give you a backup of about 10 hours of video or web surfing with Wi-Fi. It comes with built-in 25 Whr rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. The processor is custom built by Apple. It’s a 1GHz A4 processor that is designed to be “high performance” and “low power consumption” processor.

Buttons:

As with iPhone and iTouch, there aren’t many of them to confuse you! Just a few to get it started!

Let’s talk numbers!

The above picture is pretty self-explanatory I guess!

So how and when can you use iPad?

  • Mail
  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Maps
  • Notes
  • and of course eBook reader!

If you need more explanation of the above titles (in a more Apple way head over to here.)

When is it going to be available?

March 2010, is when you will see the used Amazon Kindle going for dirt cheap prices on ebay and Amazon too as the iPad launches! (No I am not saying iPad is that good but only because it’s an Apple product!)

MY VERDICT:

The iPad no doubt looks good but it has shortcoming as well. e.g. What would I do with a space as low as 64GB if I were to use it as a Video player? Also, it doesn’t have a integrated camera. Imagine how great it would have been if it had a camera. You could use it for conferencing purposes a well targeting the business users too! The video on that display, would no doubt look stunning. Apple never wanted it to be a replacement for a netbook but of course it would have been great if it had the following things. Imagine carrying a  device as thin and lightweight as iPad that handles your emailing, maps, video conferencing and ebook reader!

Apple might sure come with those changes in the next version of iPads but as of now you will have to live with it. Moreover it’s yet to be seen how developers make use of the SDK for iPad and can they turn it into an amazing device!

But overall I feel, iPad is no doubt a great piece of technology that sure is going to give the Kindle a great fight. Apple bashers will of course point out things in it and fanboys will just praise it. I am of course on neither of the side but still like the device and would want a one for myself. So is it a win for you fanboys?
